Radiation Protection for users of X-ray Analysis

Course Objective

This course aims to equip individuals with the necessary knowledge and understanding to ensure both their own safety and the safety of their staff members while working with or supervising the usage of X-ray analysis equipment. Typical sectors that utilise X-ray analysis equipment:
  • Array Radiation Mining and geochemistry;

  • Array Radiation Trace analysis;

  • Array Radiation Non-destructive testing;

  • Array Radiation Biomedical research;

  • Array Radiation Manufacturing of cement, additives, pigments, coatings and Electronics;

  • Array Radiation Metallurgy.

Course Participants

  • Array Radiation Radiation safety officers;

  • Array Radiation Users of XRF and XRD;

  • Array Radiation Researchers;

  • Array Radiation Geologists and geochemists.

Course Structure

The program has been structured as an independent set of modules with no prerequisites. Following an introduction to various aspects of radiation, the course progresses through principles and safe practices related to management and use of X-ray analysis devices. The course is suitable for persons having no previous experience or for those requiring refresher. This course is aligned with the Code of Practice for the Safe Use of X-ray Analysis Equipment.

Course Content

  • Array Radiation Scientific information and terminology;

  • Array Radiation Ionising radiation units and quantities;

  • Array Radiation Ionising radiation types and their properties;

  • Array Radiation Natural and manmade sources of ionising radiation;

  • Array Radiation Biological effects of ionising radiation;

  • Array Radiation Risk of radiation exposure;

  • Array Radiation Radiation protection philosophy and radiation dose limits;

  • Array Radiation Radiation dose control measures;

  • Array Radiation Regulatory compliance and licensing requirements;

  • Array Radiation Codes of practice and safety guides;

  • Array Radiation Responsibilities of employer, employee, and radiation safety officer;

  • Array Radiation Detection and monitoring;
