Radiation Protection for Users of Unsealed IODINE-131 in Veterinary Medicine Applications

Course Objective

This two- and half-day program is specifically designed as a standalone course for veterinary surgeons and nurses handling unsealed radioactive sources, particularly Iodine-131 used to treat feline hyperthyroidism. The learning objective of the course is to equip users with the necessary knowledge and skills in order to confidently manage administered animals and unsealed radioactive material in the workplace.

Course Structure

The program has been structured as an independent set of modules with no prerequisites. Following an introduction to various aspects of ionising radiation, the course progresses through principles and safe practices related to management of veterinary nuclear medicine and administered patients. Completion of this course is mandatory for whoever needs to apply for a use licence. This course is aligned with the Code of Practice Radiation Protection in Veterinary Medicine.

  • Array Radiation Detection and monitoring;

  • Array Radiation Radiation management plans;

  • Array Radiation Internal and external dose calculations;

  • Array Radiation Shielding calculations;

  • Array Radiation Safe handling of unsealed radioactive material in labs;

  • Array Radiation Source storage and containment;

  • Array Radiation Administering radioiodine to cats;

  • Array Radiation Waste management;

  • Array Radiation Emergency preparedness and scenarios;

  • Array Radiation Owner education;

  • Array Radiation Workbook, exercises, and competency tests.

Assessment

There are multiple practical exercises and competency tests that will be assigned to attendees throughout the day.

Certification

The participant who successfully passes the course will be granted a certificate of attainment which can be used as a proof of training or for licence application purposes.
